Subaru Crosstrek: Performance
The Crosstrek's standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Subaru BOXER® engine (152 horsepower, 145 pound-feet of torque) paired with a smartly tuned Lineartronic® transmission and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. All models also include the Subaru X-MODE® traction management system, which helps optimize wheel grip in various scenarios. Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trims utilize a more powerful 2.5-liter BOXER® engine (182 horsepower, 178 pound-feet of torque), as well as a dual-function X-MODE® system with an additional Deep Snow/Mud setting.
The Subaru Crosstrek doesn't limit you to paved roads, even in its entry-level configuration. However, Lehi outdoor enthusiasts seeking to maximize their off-road prospects will appreciate the Crosstrek Wilderness. This rugged trim level boasts attributes like a revised final-drive ratio, Yokohama® GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, and raised suspension for increased ground clearance. An upgraded cooling system gives the Wilderness trim more than double the Crosstrek's max tow rating (from 1,500 to 3,500 pounds). Plus, the reinforced roof rails can hold up to 700 pounds (stationary load limit) - perfect for a rooftop tent.
Subaru Forester: Performance
The Subaru Forester uses the Crosstrek's 182-horsepower 2.5-liter BOXER® upgrade as its standard engine for all models. However, Subaru X-MODE® isn't available for the base trim level. The Forester Wilderness has the same off-road enhancements as the Crosstrek Wilderness, plus a 180-degree Front-View Monitor for better trail visibility.
Subaru recently redesigned the Forester for the 2025 model year, and Wilderness wasn't among the available trims. However, it will still be offered as a 2024 model until the updated version joins the lineup next in the following year.
Size and Accommodations
Subaru Crosstrek
- L x W x H: 176.4 x 70.9 x 62.8 inches
- Headroom Front/Rear: 39.8 / 38 inches
- Legroom Front/Rear: 42.9 / 36.5 inches
- Maximum Cargo Capacity: 54.9 cubic feet
- Ground Clearance: 8.7 inches (9.3 in Wilderness)
The Subaru Crosstrek is the automaker's smallest utility vehicle. However, despite its "subcompact" designation, the Crosstrek is impressively accommodating, combining cozy seats, ample passenger space, and flexible storage options with city-friendly maneuverability. The cargo area measures 20 cubic feet behind the second, expandable to 54.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Subaru Forester
- L x W x H: 183.3 x 72 x 68.1 inches
- Headroom Front/Rear: 41.2 / 39.6 inches
- Legroom Front/Rear: 43.3 / 39.4 inches
- Maximum Cargo Capacity: 69.1 cubic feet (74.4 in base trim)
- Ground Clearance: 8.7 inches (9.2 in Wilderness)
The Subaru Forester is in the compact crossover class, measuring about seven inches longer and 5.3 inches taller than its Crosstrek sibling. As such, it provides appreciably more room for passengers and cargo while retaining easy drivability. Most Subaru Forester models have 27.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 69.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. However, since the base trim lacks a panoramic sunroof, its cargo capacity is a bit higher, with 29.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 74.4 behind the first.
Subaru Crosstrek & Forester Features
The Subaru Crosstrek and Subaru Forester share many of the same amenities, including nearly identical rosters for their base models. However, the Forester makes certain equipment available at lower tiers. Examples include heated front seats, a wireless charging pad, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist. The Forester also has a top-tier Touring trim, which includes a few amenities that aren't in the Crosstrek lineup, like driver memory settings, heated rear outboard seats, and a surround-view camera system.
