The Subaru Outback and Subaru Forester: Which SUV Is Right for You?

When choosing a capable, comfortable, and well-equipped SUV, the Subaru Outback and Subaru Forester are two top contenders. The beloved brand offers two excellent options for adventuresome drivers. Let's compare the Outback and Forester to see which vehicle is right for you. At Doug Smith Subaru, we have both versatile and reliable SUVs on our lot, and we are excited to help you learn more.

Which Subaru SUV Is Right for You?

If you prioritize a more spacious interior and additional engine options, the Outback might be the better fit. On the other hand, if you're looking for nimble handling and ease during your day-to-day city or suburban life, the Forester will be the ideal choice.

Design

The main difference between the Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback is the design and size. The Subaru Forester is a compact crossover SUV. It has a boxier shape than the Subaru Outback and is two inches taller than the Subaru Outback, coming in at 68.9 inches in height. The Outback on the other hand has a longer body shape and wheelbase. The Forester may be easier to navigate in cities and towns, and while commuting from Provo, while the Outback is well-designed for bumpy trails and roads.

Performance

The Subaru Outback and Forester both come standard with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, providing excellent traction and stability in various weather and road conditions in Orem. However, there are some differences in their engine options.

The Forester offers a single engine choice: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. In contrast, the Outback gives you two engine options. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder generates 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, while a more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, available on select trims, puts out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque for even more confident performance.

Both models offer a Wilderness trim designed for enhanced off-road capability, featuring upgraded suspension, all-terrain tires, and other rugged enhancements.

Interior and Cargo

When it comes to interior space and cargo capacity, the Outback and Forester have a lot in common. Both models provide comfortable seating for up to five passengers, with ample headroom and legroom in both rows. However, the Outback offers slightly more passenger volume overall, with 109 cubic feet compared to the Forester's 107.8 cubic feet.

In terms of cargo space, the Outback also has a slight edge. When the rear seats are folded down, the Forester's cargo capacity expands to 74.4 cubic feet, and the Outback has 75.6 cubic feet. Both models feature standard raised roof rails for additional cargo-carrying versatility.

Safety

Safety is of great importance with both the Outback and Forester. Subaru equips every model with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, a suite of advanced safety features that monitor the road, warn you of potential hazards as you drive in Lehi, and can even intervene automatically to help avoid or mitigate impacts.

Additional available safety systems on both models include Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Reverse Automatic Braking, and the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System. With these sophisticated technologies, you can enjoy greater peace of mind behind the wheel.

Technology

The Outback and Forester offer similar technology features designed to keep you connected, entertained, and on course. Both models come standard with the STARLINK Multimedia system, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration for seamless smartphone connectivity.

Available tech features on both models include a Harman Kardon premium audio system, wireless smartphone charging, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Built-in navigation is also available on select trims, ensuring you always find your way around American Fork.
