Subaru builds the 2026 Outback around the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. It also includes X-MODE® advanced traction management in every trim, enabling surefooted traction on loose, slippery, or uneven surfaces. That, along with at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance, makes the Subaru Outback better suited to traveling in challenging conditions than its competitor. The Honda CR-V has less ground clearance and is built on a front-wheel-drive platform that it adapts for AWD at an extra cost.
The Subaru Outback Wilderness expands on the SUV's capability with unique suspension tuning, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, dual-function X-MODE®, and more. The Honda CR-V doesn't have a comparable adventure-ready configuration.
Performance and Towing Capability
Both models are closely matched in standard performance, with the Subaru Outback producing 180 horsepower and the CR-V making 190 horsepower. However, all Outback XT trims and the Wilderness variant feature a turbocharged upgrade that generates 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Honda CR-V doesn't have an option that can match turbocharged Outback models.
The Subaru Outback can tow up to 2,700 pounds with its base engine and up to 3,500 pounds in XT and Wilderness trims. The CR-V's max tow rating is limited to 1,500 pounds.
Passenger Space, Cargo Capacity, and Roof Utility
The redesigned Subaru Outback makes excellent use of its larger cabin. Passenger volume measures 112.1 cubic feet, compared with approximately 106 cubic feet in the Honda CR-V. That additional space can make a difference when carrying family or friends on road trips out of Orem.
Both models offer impressive cargo capacity, but the Subaru Outback still comes out ahead with a maximum of 80.5 cubic feet compared to 76.5 in the CR-V. Additionally, the 2026 Outback now comes standard with reinforced roof rails that can carry up to 220 pounds while in motion and support up to 800 pounds when parked. The Honda CR-V's optional low-profile rails don't provide the same level of utility.
Interior Technology
The redesigned Subaru Outback now comes standard with a 12.1-inch touchscreen with Google-based infotainment and a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. The CR-V's largest infotainment screen is its standard 9-inch display. And while it does offer a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, it's limited to higher trim levels.
Safety
The 2026 Subaru Outback also stands apart in independent safety testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2026 Outback its highest Top Safety Pick+ designation. The model received the top "Good" rating across IIHS crashworthiness evaluations as well as front crash prevention testing.
The 2026 Honda CR-V did not earn a Top Safety Pick designation and received a "Poor" rating in the updated moderate overlap front crash test.
